MADISON Eighteen graduate students in Water Resource Management
and two faculty/staff advisors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
will conduct an inventory and assessment of coastal wetlands in Manitowoc
County this June and July.
With funding from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, they
will collaborate with the Manitowoc County Planning and Parks Commission
(MCPPC) to supplement existing data with field-based information.
Quentin Carpenter, one of the advisors at UW-Madison, says the project aims to balance aspects of education, recreation, and conservation and to incorporate the interests and concerns of Manitowoc County residents and officials. Results of their work will help the MCPPC preserve the ecology, recreational value, and heritage of the county’s coastal wetlands.
The Water Resource Management Graduate Program is administered by the Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison. Advanced students in the program complete a group workshop in a different Wisconsin locale
every year as part of their degree requirements.
Anyone who would like more information about the wetlands inventory and assessment can contact Carpenter at (608) 262-2950.
