Board of Visitors
The Board of Visitors advises and assists the director of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies in accomplishing the
institute’s mission and vision.
The board
- provides perspective from outside the university on important environmental issues and problems at all levels
- advises on the mission and vision of the Nelson Institute in creating, integrating, transferring, and applying knowledge to safeguard
the global environment
- helps assess progress toward achieving the goals of the Nelson Institute
- counsels on strategies and opportunities for the Nelson Institute, including specific projects and activities
- acts as an advocate for the Nelson Institute’s mission, vision, and programs
- helps establish contacts and relationships between the Nelson Institute, individuals, and organizations
- aids in obtaining the financial, physical, and human resources the Nelson Institute needs to accomplish its mission and vision.
Current Members
- James Addis (Co-Chair)
- Mr. Addis retired from the Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources after working in natural resource management for 37 years. His academic training is in
biochemistry, marine ecology, limnology, and fisheries.
- James Borden
- Mr. Borden retired in 1990 after 38 years of employment with the DuPont Company.
His
responsibilities at DuPont included directing or conducting studies in the areas of corporate fuels and feedstock needs and supply sources in
the U.S. and Europe, impacts of energy price changes, proposed legislation on corporate costs and profitability, and world energy supply
and demands.
- Stuart Cagen
- Mr. Cagen's is toxicology adviser at Shell Chemicals, Ltd,, Houston, Texas, specializing in
endocrine, reproductive and developmental toxicology, mechanisms of toxicology, and risk assessment. He holds a B.S. from UW-Madison and a
Ph.D. in pharmacology from Michigan State University.
- Jay Carlson
- Mr. Carlson served as counsel for the taxpayer in the three largest decided cases in the history of the U.S. Tax Court.
Mr. Carlson has more than 30 years of litigation experience. Articles include "Teamwork Among Counsel Equals Success in Litigation" and "The
Tax Advice Privilege is Alive and Well."
- Michael Dombeck
- Dr. Dombeck is a University of Wisconsin System Fellow and professor of
global conservation at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Previously, he
was chief of the U.S. Forest Service for four years. As head of the forest
service, he moved to protect old-growth areas, prohibited
mining in areas of the Rocky Mountains, and halted road-building and most logging in one-third of the national forests.
- Scott Johnson
- Mr. Johnson is vice president for global environmental and safety
actions at S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc., in Racine, Wisconsin. He provides global leadership to facilitate the development and implementation of environmental and safety
policies, strategies and actions that build upon the corporation’s eco-efficiency efforts of the 1990s and commitment to responsible
environmental management.
- Pamela Matson
- Dr. Matson is the Chester Naramore Dean of the School of Earth Sciences at Stanford University.
She is also the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Professor of Environmental Studies and a member of the Center for Environmental Science and
Policy at Stanford. Her research focuses on biogeochemical cycling and biosphere-atmosphere interactions in tropical forests and agricultural systems.
- Julia Nault
- Ms. Nault is a vice president at Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc., a global consulting, engineering, construction,
and operations firm that focuses on environment and infrastructure, with offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received her B.S. degree
in wildlife management from the University of Minnesota and is a 1984 graduate of the Nelson Institute’s Water Resources Management
Graduate Program.
- John S. Nelson
- Mr. Nelson is a consultant to the design and construction industry.
He has served as
project engineer, department head, project manager, vice president and chief executive
officer at Affiliated Engineers, Inc., in Madison. His background
includes design, applications and research experience with dynamic building systems, along with business and project management. His
research interests include sustainability and lean design. John Nelson holds an
master's degree in mechanical engineering from UW-Madison, where is an adjunct professor in the College of Engineering.
- Tia Nelson (Co-Chair)
- Ms. Nelson is executive secretary of the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands for the State of Wisconsin.
She formerly worked for the Nature Conservancy, where she established its Climate Change Program and developed monitoring and verification for
its forestry sector offset projects. She has a B.S. in wildlife ecology from UW-Madison.
- Lew Posekany, Jr.
- Mr. Posekany recently retired after a career as a managing attorney and business executive in oil and gas exploration and
production and gas pipelines. He is an alumnus of the Nelson Institute's Water
Resources Management Graduate Program and received his J.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1969. Mr. Posekany has worked
for the Coastal Corporation in Detroit and Houston and the Cenergy Corporation in Dallas as well as
for the Williams Companies, Inc., in Tulsa
and Houston, where he was senior vice president for group planning and development.
- Gail Wurtzler
- Ms. Wurtzler is an environmental lawyer with Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP in Denver, Colorado. She was born and raised in Wisconsin, and she graduated from the UW-Madison with a B.A. in political science and economics. She received a J.D. from the University of Chicago, where she worked for the Mandel Legal Aid Clinic. Her practice currently focuses on environmental toxic torts, natural resource damages, hazardous waste remediation, and brownfields redevelopment. She has also worked extensively on energy, mining, water rights, and public lands issues. She
is a former editor-in-chief of
Natural Resources & Environment, the quarterly journal of the American Bar Association's section on Environment, Energy and Resources. She frequently speaks and writes on environmental and natural resources law topics.
